Why a laboratory refrigerator is not a domestic one

A domestic refrigerator is designed to keep food from spoiling, and it does that well. What it does not do is hold a narrow band, or leave any record of having held it.

Three things prevent that by design. The auto-defrost cycle heats the evaporator on purpose and at intervals. Direct-cooling units cool through a plate and stratify the interior, colder at the top than at the bottom. And the thermostat works with a wide dead band, because keeping food does not call for more.

A laboratory unit invests in the opposite: forced air circulation to even out the interior, microprocessor control with a narrow band, and defrosting that does not disturb the temperature inside. The difference is not in cooling more, but in cooling evenly and being able to show it.

Accuracy, uniformity and stability are not the same figure

All three appear on the datasheets and describe different defects. Accuracy is how far the real temperature departs from the set value. Uniformity is the difference between two points inside at the same instant, and it is what decides whether the top shelf keeps things as well as the bottom one. Stability is how much a single point swings over time.

A unit can have good accuracy and poor uniformity: the average of the cabinet is right while one particular zone sits out of range. That is why it is worth looking at all three and not stopping at the first.

In this catalog the split is explicit. The economy line declares 1 °C of accuracy; the laboratory series, 0.1 °C. Both cover the same 2 to 8 °C range and capacities that overlap. If what you store tolerates a degree of deviation, the economy line does the job; if it does not, the difference in price buys precisely that tenth.

Glass door or solid door

Glass lets you see the contents without opening, and every opening avoided is a temperature excursion that does not happen. The glass on these units is heated, which is what keeps it from fogging over and becoming useless for that purpose.

In exchange, a glass panel insulates worse than a solid door and lets light through. If what you store is light-sensitive, the solid door is not the cheap option: it is the right one.

The chromatography refrigerator solves a different problem

It is not a bigger refrigerator. Its distinctive feature is a pass-through port in the wall, which lets you run cables and hoses inside. With that you can leave the pump, the column or the fraction collector inside the cold cabinet, and keep the connections and the controls outside.

It is what you need when the thing that has to stay cold is not a stored sample but a process under way. If you are only going to store, an ordinary laboratory refrigerator does the same for less.

Worth having on hand before requesting a quote

The measurements of the access route, not only of the gap where the unit will sit: these come in through doorways and elevators. The 1500 L model is 1.8 m wide, and several families are over 1.9 m tall.

The room temperature, because pull-down capacity is declared at a specific ambient: the laboratory series declare a return to 8 °C in 15 minutes or less with 32 °C outside. And the voltage available, which is confirmed in the quote.

Also the volume you are really going to occupy, not the nominal one. The declared capacity is that of the empty cabinet, with no shelves and no space between containers.
