How heat sterilizes

The heat is produced by electricity and arrives by infrared radiation, with no flame. Whatever is placed in the hot zone absorbs that radiation, its surface rises in temperature and the organic matter stuck to it is incinerated right there. The two families on this page declare a maximum temperature of 850 °C ± 50 °C.

The reach of the mechanism is the exposed surface of whatever fits in the opening, during the seconds it stays inside. A wrapped load, a closed vessel or a volume of liquid are not solved this way: there the sterilizing agent has to penetrate, and that is the work of an autoclave. Anyone buying this expecting to replace one is left with no process for everything else.

The size of the instrument governs

The first figure to look at is not on the unit but on what you are going to put into it. None of the diameters declared on this page goes beyond Ø35 mm: if your piece is thicker, no model takes it and no other specification changes that. It is also worth reading on each datasheet what exactly that figure measures, because the families do not all declare it on the same quantity.

The second measurement is the length. The catalog declares a hot-zone length, but it does not say how it measures it or what stretch of the instrument reaches temperature. With long pieces that is confirmed with the supplier before buying, not after.

And the piece has to tolerate the temperature. Plastic handles, glued joints and mixed-material pieces do not survive that band. Whatever comes out of the hot zone is still hot and needs to cool before touching any material.

Why the flame is left behind

An open flame heats the air above it and makes it rise. Inside an enclosure where the air is directed, that rising column runs against the flow and disturbs it right in the working zone. It also calls for gas on the bench and remains a source of ignition for as long as it is lit.

These units replace that flame with electric heat, and the instrument goes inside the unit instead of being left exposed to the air. The change has its cost: both families declare a warm-up time, so they are not ready the moment you switch them on the way a burner is.

The control changes the routine, not the temperature

This page separates the units by their form of control: by switch and digital. That difference decides how you set and watch over the work of the unit, not how hot it gets, because the stated maximum temperature is the same in both families.

If the model you are looking at declares a timer, the catalog declares its range and not what it governs. Do not take for granted that it cuts the heating when it runs out: ask beforehand, because whether the unit can be left switched on with nobody beside it depends on that.

Worth having on hand before requesting a quote

The largest outside diameter of the instrument you are going to sterilize and how much of its length needs to sit inside. Those two measurements pick the model ahead of any other consideration.

The voltage at the point where the unit will sit. The four variants declare the same supply, AC 110/220 V, so voltage does not pick the model. Which version is shipped is confirmed in the quote: on the DS-1000 series the datasheet already warns that only the 220 V one is built today, which is the one for the Chilean grid.

The bench space around the opening, clear and away from flammable solvents, and how many times a day it will be used: that defines whether it is switched on for each use or left on through the shift.
