What is measured is the piston, not the liquid

A variable-volume micropipette does not measure liquid: it measures the travel of a piston, and between the piston and the liquid there is a column of air where a good part of the error originates. That column expands if the tip is warmer than the liquid, saturates with vapor when the solvent is volatile —and then the tip drips on its own— and responds with a lag to a viscous liquid, which rises less than the setting if you aspirate quickly.

The seal between the tip and the cone is part of the measuring instrument: if the tip does not seat all the way, part of the travel is lost to the leak and the reading still shows the volume you set, not the one you delivered.

The range is chosen by its upper end

Relative error grows toward the low end of the range. The rule is not how much a model spans, but how close its maximum sits to the volume you measure day to day. Buying a single large pipette for the whole laboratory turns out expensive: at the bottom of its range it delivers a figure that does not resemble the reading.

Several families on this page state their tolerance at three volumes per model, but only one publishes the full ladder, model by model and in microliters as well as percentage, and that is where the drop shows: on its smallest model the declared systematic error goes from ±2.5% at nominal to ±25% at one tenth. The others publish the extremes; it is worth asking for the whole table before deciding.

Autoclaving is not only sterilizing

Saturated steam reaches the whole interior, and in a micropipette the parts that define the volume are the ones left exposed. The useful question is not only whether the instrument takes autoclaving, but under what conditions and how often you are going to verify the delivered volume.

Four of the nine families declare that the complete unit takes autoclaving and one declares expressly that it does not. The remaining four do not declare it either way, and that silence is not a prohibition: it is a figure to ask for, just like the temperature, which the catalog does not always declare either.

Repetitive work is solved from another side

A multichannel pipette does not solve a problem of accuracy but one of repetition: it shares the same movement among several tips at once. It only takes one tip not seating for that position to deliver a volume different from the rest, so the figure that governs a whole row is the spread between channels; it is worth asking whether the manufacturer declares it.

Delivering the same dose many times over from a reagent bottle is the work of a bottle-top dispenser: it mounts on the bottle and draws the liquid from it, with no intermediate transfer. The reagent then stays in contact with the instrument for as long as the bottle lasts, so chemical compatibility weighs as much as volume.

Worth having on hand before requesting a quote

The list of volumes you really measure and how often each one comes up: that is where the number of instruments and their ranges come from. If your procedure calls for sterilizing the instrument, say so along with the conditions of the cycle.

For work in plates, the format you use and in which direction you fill it. For the dispenser, the specific reagent and the thread of the bottle, because the catalog does not declare the adapters. And the tip size you already work with. The availability of each family is confirmed in the quote.
